Additional Grizzly G7297 12" Disc Sander Information

When we tested this big disc sander, we were more than impressed by its smooth operation. A powerful 1 HP motor drives this heavy-duty machine for all day dependability. Features include a 8 1/4" x 17 1/4" cast aluminum table that tilts from 0 degrees - 45 degrees cast iron base with built-in dust port, 110 volt - 10 amp motor that turns at 1725 RPM and a miter gauge. This really is a super deal!

What Customers Say About Grizzly G7297 12" Disc Sander:

I'd recommend staying away from this product (as well as other Grizzly products for the reasons of poor return policy and very short warranty). The table flexes as much as 5 degrees during normal operation. The force of the spinning disk pushing the workpiece downward to the table causes the flimsy table supports to flex. To begin with, it is very very hard to achieve a true 90 degree angle of the table to the disk. Even after I managed to have them take it back, I have to pay 10% restocking fee and shipping. Or any other angle for that matter. The major flaw with this disk sander it its flimsy aluminum table with poorly designed trunions. Even when the piece you are working on is small (1"x1"x1").

It takes many tries, and no matter how precise you set it, as soon as you tighten the handles it is off. But the worst "feature" by far is that it will not stay at the set angle. To add insult to injury, Grizzly support has no solutions to the problem and are very hard to convince to take the item back (because it is now "used"). Also, watch out, they only give 1 year warranty, and you have to ship it at your own expense to them.

The table does need some heavier duty support. First when I opened the box the three bolts that hold the rear housing on were broken off. These can be repaired with some machining. The machine does run pretty quiet for the size of the motor. For the price you could live it.

There is a tapped hole in the end of the barrel that accepts a spring and screw to keep the handle mated to the barrel via a series of serrations. With the screws used to adjust the table, the best I could achieve was 1/8". The first thing I found was the table lock handle assembly for the right side was not machined properly. But, I did find a few things that lack in quality. I ordered my disc sander on 3-7 and received it on 3-9. The rubber feet dampen the noise and vibration very well. Next, the directions say to set the table 1/16" from the disc. The left side was OK.

If this gap is not even, it will throw the mitre gauge out of square. All the fasteners used in assembly are metric. Very fast delivery. My fix will be to change the screws to a smaller size or enlarge the slotted holes in the left and right trunnions. The hole was not drilled deep enough for the screw to fully engage and the end result was it stripped out and the handle would not stay on. My fix was to tap out the hole for the barrel where it screws into the dust chute cover for a 1/4-20 NC Allen head bolt. On the plus side, the motor is the most powerful I was able to find(1hp) and once the corrections were and are made, it will be a good heavy duty unit. If it were not for the items I mentioned, I would have given it a higher rating.
